Vince Smith - "there’s other benefits of going low carb other than blood glucose control”
Vince Smith was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes just before leaving for Shanghai.
“I had zero help from my GP and was just put on metformin. My diabetic nurse said to look at the Diabetes.co.uk website and I found the Low Carb Program from there.”
Previously, Vince used to make to make his own fruit juice out of pears, oranges and bananas but was surprised when he discovered their high sugar content through the program.
“In China we have a type of fruit called persimmon and one has 25g of carbs in. Dragon fruit is also high in sugar, as is melon, it’s shocking.”
Vince has also swapped his steak pies for bacon and eggs and now enjoys low carb meals including smoked salmon with cauliflower rice and asparagus.
He’s found his HbA1c has dropped from 90 mmol/mol (10.4%) to 33 mmol/mol (5.2%) and he’s lost 16.5kg (2st 6 lbs).
“Do it. There’s other benefits as well as improving your blood glucose. I used to have dry skin and a dry scalp and that’s gone now. It can also help with circulation and feet issues, weight loss; there’s other benefits other than blood glucose control.”
