3 top tips for keeping on track during a weight loss plateau

Published on 12th Jun, 2022

Plateaus in weight loss are normal and experienced by many of us – but this doesn’t make them any less frustrating! Weight loss plateaus can prompt self-doubt, a lack of motivation and lead to some throwing in the towel. So, we’ve put together our top tips to keep you on track during these trying times.

Re-focus

Sometimes it’s easy to get so focused on our weight loss goal that we forget about all the other progress that’s been made. Have you reduced your blood sugar readings? Do you feel more energetic? Are you able to exercise for longer now? Take some time to re-focus your mindset and write down a list of your accomplishments to appreciate how far you’ve come – this can help when you get frustrated with the readings on the scale.

Re-assess

Think about the reasons you wanted to lose weight in the first place, are they the same now? When we face a plateau, it can be easy to forget why we started. Spend some time thinking about why your weight loss goals were important to you to begin with – maybe this has changed or become more multi-faceted over time?

Writing down your present reasons for wanting to lose weight and why they’re important to you can help to stir internal motivation and remind you why you started your journey in the first place.

Tracking

When we hit a plateau, it can be a good idea to get back into the habit of tracking. It’s often the case that once we start to see progress, we can become a little less inclined to track our food, exercise or sleeping patterns quite so closely. Starting back up with tracking can bring to light misjudgements in our perceptions – perhaps we’re not getting as much sleep as we thought, we’re eating more carbs than we thought or we’re not exercising as much as we thought. Through tracking, we can reassess our goals and ensure we’re moving in the right direction.

On the other hand, results might show that we’re right on track and hitting all our targets. This can provide the motivation needed to keep going and overcome the plateau.
