Michael put his type 2 diabetes into remission

Michael Short was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in January 2019. From around last November he really battled with a lack of energy, coming home from his job as a healthcare assistant and falling asleep. At the time he weighed 112kg (17st 8lb), and at 6ft tall his body mass index (BMI) was 33 — classified as ‘obese’.

Michael’s weight gain had escalated in the past five years, but he wasn’t too worried as he was only 51 and spent most of the day on his feet. The diagnosis was a massive wake-up call. He knew his diet was terrible, doing shifts didn’t help, as he ate at irregular times and ate a lot of carbs — about seven slices of bread a day, plus biscuits and cake.

He first followed the EatWell Plate approach as recommended by his nurse, but struggled to gain control. It was through the Diabetes.co.uk forum that Michael first learned about the low carb diet. Almost three months on, Michael had lost 19kg (3st) and got his mojo back. His HbA1c is now 39 mmol/mol (5.7%), meaning it is within normal range and he’s put his type 2 diabetes into remission. As a result, he’s been able to come off metformin.
