“I believe passionately in the low carb way of eating”
With type 2 diabetes present in her family history and having gestational diabetes during both of her pregnancies. Caroline Walker was always aware of the looming possibility of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Since both her mother and grandmother had type 2 diabetes, she was more aware than the average person about the effects of sugar consumption, so she was always careful not to eat sweets. What she didn’t realise however, was the effect of carbohydrates on her body.
After years of slow and steady weight gain, she finally bit the bullet and went to see the doctor to get a blood test done in April 2011. She was officially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with an HbA1c of 63 mmol/mol (7.9%). Through the Diabetes.co.uk forum Caroline learned about the benefits of low carb and within 3 months, her HbA1c had reduced to a normal 37mmol/mol (5.5%) and she lost nearly 13kg (2st).
“I believe passionately in the low carb way of eating, not only for people with type 2 diabetes, but for everyone without much of a waist. I would urge any woman who had diabetes during pregnancy to reduce their carb intake and get an annual HbA1c blood test to make sure they don’t end up like me.”
